In preparation of Wacquant’s lecture, participants are asked to read the following articles. More details about these lectures follow later. Two more sessions follow on May 29 and 30, with lectures by the well-known Marxist sociologist Erin Olin Wright, professor of sociology at the University of Wisconsin, as well as lectures by Sébastien Chauvin and Walter Nicholls, both at the University of Amsterdam. He is also a researcher at the Centre de européen de sociologie et de science politique in Paris. Loïc Wacquant is a professor of Sociology and Research Associate at the Institute for Legal Research, Boalt Law School, University of California at Berkeley, where he is affiliated with the Global Metropolitan Studies Program, the Program in Medical Anthropology, the Center for the Study of Race and Gender, the Designated Emphasis in Critical Theory, and the Center for Urban Ethnography. The lecture will focus on shifts in the governance and regulation of social and urban marginalization in contemporary neoliberal societies in Europe and the United States. In the lecture, Wacquant takes up the “triangular connections between class restructuring, ethnoracial division and state crafting in the era of neoliberal ascendancy” (Wacquant 2009: 315).
